Janie must've overlooked the part about the thread bar being used to hold down the pocket flap.
Basically, you're thinking correctly, LMH, it is an invisible tack. The reason it's called a thread bar is because you're doing that invisible tack quite loosely...therefore leaving a "bar" of threads between the pocket and pocket flap.
This makes it so the flap doesn't look like it's sewn down...it can move or float a little.
A true thread bar is made by working your doubled thread back and forth a couple times between the two pieces it's tacking together, then a buttonhole stitch is worked back over those loose or floating threads, forming a solid bar.

For this lesson, we have prepared a piece of wool melton 4” (10.2cm) in the width and 5” (12.7cm) in the length grain of the fabric.

Place your thimble on the middle finger of your sewing hand. Our instructor prefers an open top thimble, however you could also use a closed top version.

For demonstration purposes, we will be using a pearl cotton, which is slightly heavier than regular sewing thread.
