Everything you need to run a plasma cutter

19 Mar.,2024

Industry professionals far and wide understand the premise of plasma cutting in that it involves a melting process where a jet of ionised gas is propelled via a precisely engineered nozzle at temperatures over 20,000-degrees.

A specialist application used to cut and gouge a range of electrically conducive metals, we often see those looking for new plasma cutters for sale, used plasma cutters for sale or for hire, are welders, fabricators or boilermakers looking for reliable equipment that can cover a scope of different projects.

Understanding the basics of your new machinery is important, which is why we’ve compiled a brief guideline on our website on the plasma cutting basics, plus much more. Here, we answer a popular question, “What do you need to run a plasma cutter?”

Plasma cutting: Things to know

So, what do you need to run a plasma cutter?

Plasma cutting requires two basic elements — air and electricity. Naturally, however, you’ll need more than this to get your machine going.

Most importantly, plasma cutters require a suitable power output. This could be 110V or 220V depending on your equipment. You will also need to ensure that the plug on your machine matches the power outlet available to avoid system failures or power outages.

Plasma cutters also require an air compressor unless there is one built in. This ensures continuous air pressure and thus, precision cutting. Moisture filters are also a necessity for clean, dry air to reach the plasma from the compressor as well as prolonging the life of your machine.

Additional parts which can be useful include grinders, to clean surfaces down to bare metal, personal protective equipment (PPE) including face shields, gloves, heavy duty pants and long sleeves shirts, plus a fire extinguisher.

Further down the line you may also require replacement components such as  shields, deflectors, retaining caps, nozzles, electrodes and swirl rings. Of course, there may be other parts that you need along the way, so for more information, it’s best to chat to one of our skilled technicians.

A spark in history

Did you know that plasma cutting was invented in 1957 by Doctor Robert Gage of Union Carbide’s Linde Division? The first plasma cutting patent was granted to Union Carbide, an America Chemical Corporation, in the United States on 10 September, 1957 which was held for the next 17 years. During this time, the patent holder learned that by sending a high-velocity jet of superheated gas through a constricted opening, that ionized gas, or plasma, forms which has the ability to melt metal at rapid rates. The predominant method of thermal cutting at that time was done by oxyacetylene applications, a process that is still useful albeit not as common for cutting and gouging considering the prominence and advancement of plasma cutting today.
